FRISCO, Texas – Only three teams in the history of Major League Soccer have reached the 200-win plateau. The LA Galaxy reached the 200-win mark in April of 2010, and D.C. United came in right behind them that June. Just over a year later, FC Dallas has become the third MLS franchise to win 200 games with last weekend’s 2-1 victory over Chivas USA.
In honor of this milestone, FCDallas.com has put together a list of the Top 10 regular season wins in franchise history with input from fans, long-time front office staff and former players. We’ll reveal three games each day, leading up to the unveiling of what we believe to be one of the most memorable wins in club history on Thursday, June 23.
Like any “best of” list, the contents and order are up for debate – let your voice be heard in the comments section below.
Let’s get started with games 10 through 8.
Win #200 – June 18, 2011: DAL 2, CHV 1
Major milestones are usually at least worth consideration when it comes to any “best of” list, but the drama of a late game-winning goal by a second half substitute definitely helped FCD’s 200th franchise victory break the top 10.
FC Dallas took the lead in the 22nd minute when Brek Shea scored his sixth goal of the season – already one more than the native Texan tallied in 25 appearances last year. Chivas USA tied it up in the 71st, but second half substitute Jackson scored his first MLS goal with five minutes left in regulation to regain the lead and give FC Dallas its 200th win in club history.
Win #28 – July 18, 1997: DAL 3, SJ 1
Hat trick comeback
Number nine on our list is another milestone of sorts, as it represents the first hat trick in franchise history. Playing in the Cotton Bowl against the then-San Jose Clash, Dallas went down 1-0 in the 25th minute at the hands of forward Jeff Baicher.
The home side would answer back with authority, as striker Dante Washington tallied at the 42nd, 46th and 68th minute marks to seal the victory for the then-Burn. Washington won the team Golden Boot that year and would end up scoring 26 goals in 90 appearances before being traded to the Columbus Crew in 2000.
Win #100 – August 10, 2002: DAL 3, CHI 1
As we said before, milestones matter – and it doesn’t hurt that win number 100 happened to be a Brimstone Cup rivalry match featuring goals by two of the most prolific players in club history.
Oscar Pareja gave Dallas the lead in the first half when he put away a Bobby Rhine pass in the 25th minute. Chicago tied it up after the break when second half substitute Hristo Stoitchkov scored an unassisted tally in the 64th.
The match appeared to be destined for a draw until the 89th minute, when Jason Kreis scored the game-winner in front of the hometown crowd. Dallas midfielder Ronnie O’Brien added an insurance goal in stoppage time to put a bow on the club’s hundredth win in franchise history.
