Inching closer to this weekend’s match with Chivas USA (Saturday at 7:30 p.m. CT), FC Dallas Head Coach Shellas Hyndman’s morning training session ran a bit shorter than it did on Wednesday – most likely due to the vast rise in temperature.
The highlight of the morning training session pitted the majority of last weekend’s starters against the reserves in a short-field scrimmage. Young defender Moises Hernandez, who has yet to look out of place with the first team, played well at left back while versatile forward Jason Yeisley held down the center back position for the reserves.
For the first time since joining FC Dallas on August 13, Jackson wandered off of his usual position on the right flank. The speedy Brazilian played in the middle of the pitch, knocking the ball around well with Jeff Cunningham.
Midway through the drill Cunningham, doing what he does best, ran at rookie defender Zach Loyd. Loyd stood his ground, but Cunningham earned a free kick after the ball struck the defender in the arm.
Trailist Flavio Dias took the ensuing free kick, choosing to play a hard ball in on the ground to the back post. Cunningham just missed getting a boot on the pass before it crossed the end line.
Following a short break and several substitutions, Jair Benitez played a good ball into the area for Ruben Luna. Luna rose above his marker to knock his second goal of the week to the back post.
Dax McCarty (strained right quad) and Kyle Davies (strained left hamstring) participated in team warm-up drills, but opted to work with the training staff during full contact drills. Showing signs of recovery, defender Ugo Ihemelu was present at Pizza Hut Park for the first time today since suffering a concussion against Philadelphia on August 8. He did not participate in any drills.
