FRISCO, Texas – While it’s not the return they had envisioned, FC Dallas is back in Frisco after spending 16 days in Orlando for the MLS is Back tournament. The club was forced to withdraw from the competition before it began after numerous players tested positive for COVID-19.
“Everybody involved with the organization is disappointed that we had to withdraw from the tournament,” said midfielder Paxton Pomykal. “But I think everybody has turned the page now and we’re looking forward to getting prepared for our next games whenever that may be. We’ve turned the page so we’re all in good spirits and happy to be heading home.”
The entire FCD Orlando delegation spent 14 of the 16 days in quarantined in their rooms at the Walt Disney Swan and Dolphin resort hotel to minimize the spread after the club received its first positive test results.
“Everybody’s happy to be out of quarantine—especially the guys that tested positive (and have now recovered) for COVID,” Pomykal continued. “Everybody’s back healthy now mostly and that’s the most important thing.”
The team flew back on a Delta charter flight from Orlando to the DFW airport before taking two charter buses to Toyota Stadium.
“It’s mixed emotions,” goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer said on their return. “It’s been a tough time in quarantine, so we’re relieved to get out and leave our rooms and hopefully get back on track towards normalcy and start training again. But obviously we’re still disappointed not to be able to take part in the tournament and having to watch these games on TV and not be able to compete. But we’re looking forward to our next step and getting back on the field.”
