FRISCO, Texas – This week on the FCD Rewind series is FC Dallas vs. Atlanta United from April 20, 2019. The match will be re-broadcasted this Sunday, June 21 at 7PM on TXA 21. This replay will also available to stream on fcdallas.com/OnDemand beginning the following Monday.
Here are a few reasons to tune in this Sunday.
FC Dallas and Atlanta United have only met three times but all have been tightly contested battles. In their most recent meeting, FC Dallas travelled to Mercedes Benz Arena to face the defending MLS Cup Champions. Luchi’s men entered the game in good form with three wins from their last four while Atlanta had only registered one victory from its first five outings of 2019. Regardless, facing the defending champs on their home turf is never easy, so FCD had their work cut out for them.
This game saw Luchi experiment with a different formation than we’d seen in his previous six outings. Instead of the usual 4-3-3, FCD lined up in a 5-3-2 with a back five of Ryan Hollingshead, Reto Ziegler, Matt Hedges, Bressan and Reggie Cannon for extra cover against Atlanta’s lethal attack. Also, winger Michael Barrios reprised his role as a makeshift striker and lined up next to Jesús Ferreira for some extra speed on the break.
What sticks out most from this match was FC Dallas’ effectiveness on the counterattack. Both Dallas’ goals came when the team transitioned from defense into attack within seconds, followed by pinpoint crosses for close-range finishes. While it’s not necessarily Luchi’s preferred style of play, this performance showed that Dallas can be versatile and pragmatic when they need to be.
