FRISCO, Texas – It’s a familiar lineup that faces the Montreal Impact today as Luchi Gonzalez fields the same Starting XI that earned a 2-0 win over Philadelphia Union on opening day. Let’s dive a little deeper with today’s Lineup Notes pres. by UnitedHealthCare.
Midfield Double Pivot
New midfield signings Thiago Santos and Tanner Tessmann made their MLS debuts last weekend and will reprise their roles together once again. The duo formed a strong double pivot behind the more advanced Jesus Ferreira in Luchi’s three-man midfield and helped FCD win the midfield battle against Philly. Today, the pair have been trusted to maintain their midfield partnership to help protect Dallas’ backline. Last week's super sub Paxton Pomykal is available from the bench again and could perform a similar role as last week by providing an extra spark as a late-game substitute.
The Front Three
Last week’s front three of Michael Barrios, Zdenek “Kobra” Ondrasek and Fafa Piault will lead FCD’s line again today. Kobra maintained last season’s form through the offseason by scoring Dallas’ first goal of 2020 with an impressive half-volley from outside the box against Philly and the Czech front man will look to build on that scoring form against Montreal. Although Picault and Barrios haven’t found the score sheet yet this season, their collective defensive work rate is crucial to Luchi’s philosophy of defending from the front.
Familiarity in Defense
While it’s the same lineup as last week, no area of the field has more familiarity and experience than Dallas’ back five of Jesse Gonzalez in goal, the center back partnership of Reto Ziegler and Matt Hedges and the fullback pairing of Ryan Hollingshead and Reggie Cannon. There was some concern over Hollingshead’s availability after sustaining a hyper extended knee last week against Philly, but the 28-year-old was deemed healthy enough to earn his second start of the year.
