FRISCO, Texas - Luchi Gonzalez fields three offseason acquisitions in his first starting lineup of the new season, including 18-year-old Tanner Tessmann who signed a Homegrown contract earlier this week.
Tessmann Makes MLS Debut
Fresh off becoming FCD’s 28th Homegrown, Tanner Tessmann makes his MLS debut just days after signing his first pro contract. With more experienced players Bryan Acosta and Brandon Servania still recovering from preseason injuries, Tessmann fills the void as Dallas’ starting box-to-box midfielder. Tessmann played 14 games with USL League One affiliate North Texas SC last season and has been trusted to make the jump to MLS on opening day.
Picault Wins Left Wing Battle
Coming into the season, it was unclear who would win the starting role at left wing: Santiago Mosquera or new signing Fafa Picault. For the first game, at least, it’s the former Union forward Picault who will look to stretch Philly’s backline with his speed and directness. Picault already faced his former employers in preseason, scoring the first goal in Dallas’ 3-2 win.
If it ain't broke don’t fix it. Luchi has opted to stick with last season’s starting back five in defense. Jesse Gonzalez, fresh off signing a new contract in the offseason, starts in goal for his 100th MLS appearance. Matt Hedges and Reto Ziegler form the standard center back partnership and Ryan Hollingshead and Reggie Cannon start on the left and right respectively. One change, new addition Thiago Santos will make his debut as the defensive midfielder after joining from Palmeiras in Brazil.
