FRISCO, Texas – Months of planning, hard work and anticipation have led up to this. FC Dallas kicks off its 25th season at home against the Philadelphia Union on Saturday afternoon. It's the earliest the club has began the regular season, and barely four months since its narrow loss to the eventual champions in last year’s playoffs.
“We’re very excited,” Luchi Gonzalez said earlier this week. “This is what the boys train for—the opportunity to play in front of our fans. We’ve learned a lot about the group, the personnel has been there for each other and now this is when it counts. Everyone has zero points and we’re fighting for the same thing. We’re excited and building for this week. We love each other and we’ll support each other to give everything for Saturday.”
Luchi and FC Dallas faced Philadelphia last week in the club’s penultimate preseason game. Dallas controlled a majority of the contest, going three goals up before conceding two in the final 10 minutes. If that game is any indication, the home opener should be a good watch.
“They’re a good team, they have good players and they’re well coached,” Luchi added. “We have a big challenge ahead of us. So that [preseason] game was just good preparation; we learned about them and they learned about us. Now we need to be confident in how we work and bring it on Saturday. [We want] to play the FC Dallas way with energy and courage. We want the ball, to get pressure on the ball and attack. So now it’s focusing on us, respecting what Philly can do, and putting it all together to start the season on a positive note.”
Dallas is undefeated against the Union at Toyota Stadium (5-0-1) and maintaining that streak Saturday afternoon would be an ideal start to Luchi's second season.
