Chula Vista, CA. — Preseason is fully underway, and FC Dallas' first travel stint is in Chula Vista, California, where the team will stay for a week. Los Toros will stay at the Chula Vista Athletic Training Center — a 155-acre campus for Olympic and Paralympic athletes. Throughout the week, Michael Ramirez of FCD Digital and Social will give updates on everything going on with the team and its players.
Things kicked off a bit later than usual today, as FC Dallas faced the San Diego Loyal for another preseason match here in California. Players received treatment from yesterday's match against the Vancouver Whitecaps in the morning. After a team meeting to review a few concepts, the players made their way to the the training pitch here at the Chula Vista Athletic Training Center.
The starters from yesterday's game got the day off, getting treatment and regeneration done. So, the younger group, who played in the third period against Vancouver got all the minutes today.
Today's Starting XI consisted of: Jimmy Maurer, Bryan Reynolds, Nkosi Burgess, Callum Montgormery, Derek Waldeck, Manuel Ferriol, Tanner Tessmann, Thomas Roberts, Ema Twumasi, Cal Jennings, and Ricardo Pepi.
Reynolds got his first minutes of preseason action today after dealing with a knock for the past week, but he was the only change in the side that had played just 24 hours prior. North Texas SC players Arturo Rodriguez, Imanol Almaguer and Gibran Rayo also saw action off the bench.
When the full-time whistle blew, the Loyal had come away with a 1-0 win — the goal being scored by Francis Atuahene, who is currently on the Loyal roster. This was a game that was seen as a significant one for FC Dallas. The team played a bunch of young players who are on their way up through the system by way of Academy and MLS SuperDraft, and they played Landon Donovan's team — who was playing in its first professional match in the club's history.
The Loyal will play in the USL Championship, and they play in a city that will surely be fighting for a MLS bid within the next few years.
Another significant moment of the day was the fact that Reggie Cannon, Jesus Ferreira and Brandon Servania rejoined the group from national team duty, as did Homegrown Dante Sealy. The trio that represented FCD yesterday during the U.S. Men's National Team match will participate in activities starting Tuesday, and they all have a chance at playing in the team's final match of this trip on Thursday — against LAFC.
Following today's match, the team watched the Super Bowl in support of the Kansas City Chiefs — also owned by the Hunt Family.
The group will now have three days of training ahead of Thursday's preseason match.
