FRISCO, Texas – FC Dallas will open its 2020 MLS season against the Philadelphia Union on Saturday, Feb. 29 at 5 PM at Toyota Stadium. Since we're still a few months away from the big day, let’s take a look back at FCD’s season-opening games from years past.
Dallas has a 13-4-7 all-time record in season openers and is currently on a 10-game unbeaten streak. FCD’s last loss on opening day was 3-1 defeat to Chicago Fire on March 21, 2009. Since then, Dallas has six wins and four ties on opening day and have outscored the opponents 15 to seven.
FC Dallas has actually faced Philadelphia in a home opener before. In 2016, Dallas beat the Union 2-0 in the first game of the season with goals from Fabian Castillo and Maxi Urruti. Both goals were assisted by Argentine playmaker Mauro Diaz who would later be named to MLS Best XI for that season.
Overall, FC Dallas has a 6-2-4 record against Philadelphia dating back to their first matchup in the 2010 season. In the previous meeting between the teams, the Union got the best of FC Dallas with late 2-1 comeback victory in Talen Energy Stadium last April. The Union will be up against a familiar face when they travel to Frisco in February. Fafá Picault joined FC Dallas in November after spending three seasons in Chester, PA and will look to get the better of his former side in what may be his debut for the club.
Dallas will play 17 home and 17 away matches for a total of 34 regular season games. FCD will play Western Conference opponents twice, once at Toyota Stadium and once on the road, for a total of 24 matches. The remaining 10 matches will be played against Eastern Conference opponents. The remainder of FC Dallas’ 2020 MLS regular season schedule will be released at a later date.
FC Dallas will also take part in an opponent's home opener this year when the team travels to play New York City FC on March 14 at Yankee Stadium. Dallas has a 1-1-3 all-time record against NYCFC and has one loss and one tie when playing at Yankee Stadium. Last season, Dallas and New York City battled to a 1-1 draw at Toyota Stadium thanks to a goal from Zdenek Ondrasek in the second half.
