Rodriguez, Damus, Jatta, Pepi Named to USL League One Teams of the Year

FRISCO - After a season where North Texas ran away with the regular season title, it was rewarded with four team of the year selections. Arturo Rodriguez and Ronaldo Damus were named to the 2019 USL League One All-League First Team, and Alfusainey Jatta and Ricardo Pepi were named to the 2019 USL League One All-League Second Team. The total of four Team of the Year selections was tied for the most by any team in the league.

Arturo Rodriguez has been one of the most dominant players in USL League One all year. Rodriguez was named as the USL League One champion last week, with his 10 assists leading the pack by a considerable amount, as well as leading the league in key passes with his closest challenger 23 chances created behind him. Rodriguez was a menace with the ball at his feet, coming in forth in the league with 60 dribbles completed. The Mexican born midfielder also had the third most goals on the team with the most potent attack in the league.

Ronaldo Damus was a shoo-in for the 2019 USL League One All-League First team after his stunning debut season. Damus set the league alight with 16 goals, which earned him the Golden Boot. He also recorded the fourth most shots in the league. Even more remarkably, Damus played significantly less minutes than other team’s top scorers, ending up with an average of a goal every 87 minutes. Damus only scored 1 goal from the penalty spot, making his achievement all the more impressive.

Alfusainey Jatta was a key part of North Texas’s midfield for the majority of the year, earning him a place in the 2019 USL League One All-League Second Team. Jatta was remarkably consistent, playing in 26 of 29 games, and was third in the team in passes per 90 minutes when considering players with at least 10 appearences. Jatta was also key to North’s Texas strong defensive showing, coming in the top three in the team in blocks, clearances, interceptions, tackles, duels, and aerial duels.

Ricardo Pepi was the final USL League One Team of the Year selection for North Texas, but certainly not the least of the selections. Pepi was third in the league with 11 goals and second on the team with 43 shots even though he only had 13 appearances. He was especially effective early in the year, scoring seven goals in the first nine games, giving North Texas a significant lead at the top of the table that they never relinquished. Pepi was also the scorer of both goals in the USL League One Semi-Final, sending the team to the USL League One Final.
