North Texas SC vs South Georgia Tormenta FC Match Preview | 9.14.19

FRISCO — USL League One leaders North Texas SC (15-5-5, (+20) 50 points) will host fifth place South Georgia Tormenta FC (8-7-9, (-2) 33 points) at Erk Russel Park on Saturday September 14 at 7 PM CT. The teams have faced off twice in Texas, and the most recent encounter was a 5-0 victory for North Texas, a game that holds the record for the most goals scored and the biggest margin of victory for the Texas based team.

Current Form
North Texas SC will travel to Georgia in excellent form. North Texas has won the last four games and has kept a clean sheet in three of those games. The offense during those four games have been impressive as well, scoring 14 during that stretch. However, three of those four games were at home, and it will be hoping to improve its recent away form, as the Texans have lost two of its last four away games. The last away game, a 3-1 victory against Orlando will give North Texas something positive to build upon.

The Opponent
South Georgia Tormenta is in what can only be described as free-fall. The first time the two teams met, a win by South Georgia would have vaulted it into first. In less than two months, South Georgia have gone from second place to fifth, and the recent form makes for grim reading. It is winless in their last eight games, losing two of the last three. The fall from grace has coincided with poor home form, with the team winless in their last six at home. Tormenta still have playoff aspirations, and if they are to make it to the postseason, the Statesboro based team will need to improve. It will hope facing the league leaders can give the necessary impetuous to return to the form it showed early in the season.

Players to Watch
North Texas are rolling right now, and at the center of the good form is the play of forward Ronaldo Damus. The Haitian born striker notched his second hat trick of the year against Richmond on Tuesday, taking his tally for the year to 16 goals, six clear of his nearest competitor for the golden boot. The hat trick came four days after a brace against Orlando, making Damus the first USL League one player to score multiple goals in consecutive games. Damus has been great all year for North Texas, but right now the forward is nigh-unplayable.

South Georgia have struggled offensively and at the back recently, so if they are to come away with points from their upcoming matchup, they will need a player who can contribute on both sides of the ball. Luckily, the team has one such player in defender Conner Antley. Antley is one of the team’s best defenders and is in their top three in multiple defensive categories, such as duels won, tackles, clearances, and interceptions. The American defender is also an offensive threat and leads the team in assists. If Tormenta are to get a positive result, Antley will need to bring his A game.
