FRISCO – FC Dallas’ two representatives at the 2019 MLS All-Star game Matt Hedges and Paxton Pomykal combined for 62 minutes in the All-Stars’ 3-0 loss to Atlético Madrid on Wednesday, July 31 at Exploria Stadium in Orlando.
Defender Matt Hedges earned his first start in his third MLS All-Star game, partnering with former FCD teammate and fellow center back Walker Zimmerman for the first time since the latter’s departure to LAFC. Hedges played the entire first half, making a team-high three tackles and registering the best passing accuracy of any All-Star with 96.7%.
Paxton Pomykal earned his first MLS All-Star appearance via a Commissioner’s Pick which recognized the 19-year-old’s breakout season, which has seen him named to the MLS Team of the Week five times so far. Subbing on for LAFC’s Diego Rossi in the 73rd minute, Pomykal had 10 touches, nine passes and drew a foul before the final whistle.
Now with the All-Star game in their rearview mirrors, Hedges and Pomykal must shift their focus to FC Dallas’ upcoming match on Saturday—which coincidentally will also be at Orlando City's Exploria Stadium.
"Yeah, it's strictly business,” Pomykal said after Wednesday’s match. “The team (FC Dallas) flies in tomorrow, we have film already in our emails to study after this game. It's nice that we don't have to make the extra travel and extra miles on our legs so we can be fresh for Saturday. I only played like 20 minutes so I'm ready to go for Saturday."
With a U-20 FIFA World Cup and an MLS All-Star appearance now under his belt, 2019 has been a special year for the Homegrown teenager. However, Pomykal is confident there’s still more to come.
"I think it's been a solid year for me so far and hopefully I can continue my form but I definitely think there's better soccer to be played by myself especially with FC Dallas,” Pomykal said. “I think there's more for me to give to the team and hopefully the last 11 games of this season we can see that."
FC Dallas takes on Orlando City SC on Saturday, August 3rd at 6:30 PM at Exploria Stadium. The match will be broadcasted on Texas 21 and streaming on ESPN+.
