PLAYOFF PRIMER: What to Watch for in the Mid-Week Games Around MLS

FRISCO - Sunday's match vs. Sporting will be the largest deciding factor to date in FC Dallas' hopes of a first-round bye. Both teams are among the top three in the West, vying for those two coveted spots atop the table.

But before we can look at exactly how Dallas can clinch a spot in the Conference Semifinal round, there are several mid-week games that could play a role in the weekend scenarios.

Dallas will have its eye on Vancouver more than any other city on Wednesday night. There, Sporting KC will face a Whitecaps side in desperate need of a win to keep their slim hopes of the postseason alive.

SKC sits four points back of Dallas in the table with a game in-hand coming to fruition tonight. A Sporting loss or draw would assure Dallas the chance to clinch a top-two bid with a win on Sunday.

Another place to keep a slight eye on is Orlando, where Seattle Sounders FC will face the struggling Lions. Seattle has a maximum potential of 59 points, two greater than Dallas' current total. A win by FCD on the weekend would officially leave Seattle in the rearview in terms of seeding, but dropped points in Florida by Sounders FC could also do so. If the Sounders were to win out, while SKC-FCD and SKC-LAFC on the season's final weekend play to draws with a couple other bad results for the top three, the Sounders could still sneak into a top-two spot or at the very least jump Dallas in positioning.

  • Oct. 17: Sporting KC at Vancouver Whitecaps FC - A result from the home side would go a long way in Dallas' hopes to clinch a first-round bye.
  • Oct. 17: Seattle Sounders FC at Orlando City SC - Seattle is still hanging around as an outside threat to make a run up the table. A draw or loss would likely put Dallas out of their late-season reach.
