DALLAS - In dramatic fashion, the FC Dallas U-18s defeated EPL Academy champions Middlesbrough FC 1-0 to advance to the Dr Pepper Dallas Cup Gordon Jago Super Group semifinals for the first time since 2011 and second time in team history.
Playing the final game of the night at the Cotton Bowl, results around the Super Group ensured that the winner of the match would advance to the semifinals while if it was a draw, Real Salt Lake would advance. Neither team ventured too far forward in a cagey first half that ended 0-0.
In the second half, both teams stepped on the gas with the English side hitting the post twice in a wild second half. As time ticked down, FC Dallas gradually gained control of the match but could not find the go-ahead goal.
In the 91st minute, FCD earned another set piece that was cleared but only to the top of the box. Winger Devin Vega volleyed the rebound into the back of the net to spark wild celebrations sending FCD to the Super Group semifinals.
FC Dallas will play EPL side Everton FC at Toyota Stadium on Friday night at 8:00PM while the other semifinal will pit Brazilians Fluminense against Fulham FC at 6:00PM.
FC Dallas U-14 Academy Defeats Albion SC, Advance to Quarter Finals
by Javier Navarro
On a windy Wednesday evening, the FC Dallas U-14 Academy defeated Albion SC White 3-0 to advance to the quarter-finals of the U-15 division of the 2016 Dr Pepper Dallas Cup.
FCD was able to put the pressure on the Albion defense in the first half, threatening to score on multiple occasions and creating great chances. The high winds played a significant factor throughout the game, foiling several attacking opportunities for the U-14s.
The second half saw the team finally being able to break through. During the middle of the half, FCD was awarded a corner kick and was taken by midfielder Thomas Roberts. With a little help from the wind, Roberts was able to score an olympic goal as his cross saw the ball bend in enough to hit the cross bar and find the back of the net.
Minutes later, Roberts from the same corner spot would once again use the wind to his advantage and get his corner kick to find the back of the net. During the final 10 minutes, Albion sent more men forward, desperate to score. FCD took advantage on a counter attack thanks to a great run by midfielder Adrian Munoz who was able beat his defender in a footrace and smash in the goal to seal the victory.
The U-14s hope to continue their impressive Dallas Cup campaign, as they have scored 14 goals in three game and allowed zero scores. The team will play their quarter-final match against Tigres at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 24 at MoneyGram Soccer Park.
