Dallas Cup Round-up: Knockout Round

DALLAS -- The quarterfinal round was not a pleasant stay for the last remaining FC Dallas teams in the 2013 Dr Pepper Dallas Cup. Both the El Paso U-16 team and the U-16 Academy squad dropped tough decisions on Friday, and the 00 Boys East team was eliminated from the U-13 age group Thursday.

The U-16 Academy squad went down on Friday afternoon in a penalty shoot out, 3-2, to Southern California side FRAM.

The game ended 0-0 with most of the chances in FC Dallas' end. Antonio Aquilar and Kristoffer Reaves provided many chances along the right-side of the field against FRAM.

In the middle of the second half, Reaves was able to slip by his marker and beat a FRAM defender on the baseline. His shot went over the FRAM goalkeeper but there was no one on the other side for FCD to knock it in the goal.

U-16s weren't able to do much in the two overtime periods and thus the game went to penalties.

In the penalty round, U-16 Academy 'keeper Estevan Vasquez got a finger on the first two FRAM kicks but both still found the back of the net. On the third FRAM attempt, Vasquez took a big step forward on the kick and brushed it wide. Unfortunately from there, FC Dallas missed its next three penalty kick attempts, while FRAM was able to put away the one more.

The El Paso U-16 team dropped a tough quarterfinal match to CF Monterrey of Mexico, 1-0. Monterrey scored the game’s lone goal right before the halftime whistle.

El Paso 'keeper Brandon Garcia kept the game within reach throughout the match, making several big stops against Monterrey. He also got helped out late in the second half when Monterrey got a counter attack chance that beat Garcia but Kevin Hidalgo was able to help clear the ball off the goal line to keep it at 1-0.

But El Paso couldn’t muster up any chances in the second half to take the game into overtime.

And FCD's third team to reach the knockout stage, the 00 Boys East team was eliminated in a 3-0 loss to California's Golden State Academy on Thursday.
