FRISCO, Texas – The Complex at FC Dallas Stadium played host to the eleventh annual Michael Brown Winter Classic presented by BB&T last weekend, with 145 teams participating in the friendly format tournament.
The tournament kicked off on Friday evening and brought in teams from all over the state, including 45 FC Dallas Youth squads, as well as teams from Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas and Missouri. With a U-10 Academy division and U-11 through U-14 Competitive divisions, the Winter Classic format is meant to help teams shake off the rust as they prepare for the upcoming Spring soccer season.
There were 288 tournament games played on the Complex over the weekend, in addition to the scrimmage between the FC Dallas first team and Houston Baptist University on Saturday morning. FC Dallas players Bobby Warshaw and Andrew Jacobson also made appearances and signed autographs on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
Sponsors included presenting sponsor BB&T, Subaru and Van Go Imaging. There were also 50 FC Dallas Youth parents and players that volunteered throughout the tournament.
“We're excited to be able to provide the opportunity for teams to play competitive matches leading up to the league season,” said Tournament Director Jesse McNeil III. “Two years ago this tournament had just 22 teams playing in freezing weather; this year we hosted 145 teams at the Complex at FC Dallas Stadium on all 16 grass and turf fields over three days.
“We estimate over 35,000 people came out to the Complex over the course of the Michael Brown Winter Classic. It really has come a long way in a short time to become one of the most popular tournaments we manage.”
