FC Dallas Training Report: 4/22

In the final day of preparations before Saturday’s match at Vancouver (6 p.m. CT on FSSW+), FC Dallas ran through a quick training session at Empire Field Friday afternoon. It was the team’s second session in as many days on the turf at Empire Field and the squad was both focused and efficient with their time.

“The bottom line is we’ve got to win,” said team captain Daniel Hernandez following the afternoon session. “It’s been a long road trip. Obviously we didn’t get the result we wanted last week against Portland.

"Training this week has just been focusing on trying to get three points. More than anything just at this point, we have to get a win, whether it’s playing great soccer, or just kind of going out there and fighting and scrapping and trying to get the three points."

It was close to this time a year ago when the stars aligned for the Dallas side in a 1-0 win at Houston on May 5, despite playing nearly 20 minutes down a man. That’s the type of grit Hernandez said he is looking for from his squad on Saturday.

“At this point, it’s just trying to man up a little bit and do what we have to do to pull out a win,” said the captain. “More than anything, I think the thing that’s hurt us all this season is just mental mistakes, whether it’s not marking up or some mishap on a play. I think we can avoid those mistakes.

"Without a doubt, we have the talent and the capability of dominating teams and having more wins than what we have now. Hopefully, we can start tomorrow.”

Don’t quit your day job
During a warm-up drill at the start of training, goalkeeper Chris Seitz lined up near midfield in front of the player benches and lobbied assistant coach John Ellinger for a new gig. Seitz told Ellinger he could sub in for free kicks, but then promptly shanked his next attempt. A laughing Ellinger walked away shaking his head.

Que está loco
Midfielder Marvin Chavez has recovered well from the concussion and head laceration he suffered in the Dallas side’s win over Colorado two weeks ago. But don’t ask his teammates how the Honduran national is doing. When Chavez talks, some of his teammates advise not listening to him (especially if he’s arguing his case over a game they happen to be playing). They say he doesn’t know what he’s talking about, shaking their heads and pointing to the spot where Chavez received stitches.

Eyeing a return to the lineup
Schellas Hyndman’s famous butter leather jacket has been spotted this week and could be eyeing a return to the lineup on Saturday. The Dallas skipper has been non-committal about the possibility of the jacket’s return, but it is on the trip and certainly a possibility should Vancouver temps dip on Saturday.

FC Dallas takes on the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday, April 23 at 6 p.m. CT. The game will be televised locally on FOX Sports Southwest Plus. Check back to for score updates and the match recap following the game.
