FC Dallas Training Report: 3/4

PHOENIX, Arizona -- The team received good news in the pre-practice discussion - that yesterday was the final two-a-day session of the preseason. Accordingly, FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman outlined today's practice session - a short warm-up and two 30-minute halves of 11-on-11.

The coach tweaked his lineups to allow the best possible look at trialist Kevin Gall, who ran atop the blue team's formation in a 4-4-2. FC Dallas' second trialist, Christian Arrieta started alongside Charlie Campbell at center back for the green team, who also ran a 4-4-2.

Green (4-4-2, left to right): Chris Seitz, Moises Hernandez, Christian Arrieta, Charlie Campbell, Andrew Wiedeman, Bryan Leyva, Bobby Warshaw, Bruno Guarda, Peri Marosevic, Ruben Luna, Maykel Galindo.
Blue (4-4-2, left to right): Kevin Hartman, Jair Benitez, Brek Shea, Scott Gordon, Jackson, Eric Avila, Daniel Hernandez, David Ferreira, Marvin Chavez, Milton Rodriguez, Kevin Gall.

First Half

The blue team took the initiative from the beginning of the match. A botched clearance from the green team fell to the feet of Eric Avila, who was denied only by the right post. Going the other direction, green had the next three chances. Bruno Guarda came free at the top of the 18-yard box, but just lifted his shot a yard high of the crossbar. The second was Ruben Luna, who had a shot from the left flank miss the back post by a foot. Roughly 10 minutes later, green had its best chance of the first half when Guarda outworked two defenders to send a through ball in for Peri Marosevic. One-on-one with Kevin Hartman, Marosevic blasted a shot high to the near post. Hartman reacted quickly, making a full-extension save to his left to deny the chance. The veteran goalkeeper's highlight-reel saves and excellent organizational skills were the only thing that kept the green team from finding the back of the net in the first half.

Changes for Green at the half
1. George John replaced Campbell at center back.
2. Eric Alexander came on for Bobby Warshaw in center midfield.
3. Victor Ulloa replaced Bryan Leyva on the left side.
4. Jonathan Top jumped in for Ruben Luna up front.

Second Half

The blue team retained their first-half lineup, but at the 15-minute mark of the second half green made a second wave of substitutions. Luna returned to his forward position for Maykel Galindo. Campbell moved to right mid for Marosevic. Warshaw came on for Guarda at center mid and Josh Lambo replaced Chris Seitz in goal for the green team.

To that point in the half, neither side had any clear advantage in possession or any outstanding scoring chances. Near the 20-minute mark, the blue team held the ball in green's defensive third, but again, could not find the back of the net.

A scoreless scrimmage and the return of George John was another good sign for an FC Dallas defense that allowed a franchise low 28 goals in 30 games last season. John looked like his old self physically, and certainly brought a calming influence to a back line that is now just an Ugo Ihemelu away from being complete.

In a match where both defenses shined, Moises Hernandez stood out for the green team. The youngster has made great strides throughout this preseason and today, he was the best Home Grown player on the field.

FC Dallas will regroup tomorrow to face the Arizona Sahuaros.  Stay tuned to FCDallas.com for preseason news and updates.
