Match Recap: FC Dallas downs Houston Baptist 4-1

FRISCO, Texas (Feb. 15, 2011) – FC Dallas needed 20 minutes of action to settle down and fine-tune its attack before netting three unanswered goals in a 10-minute span of a 4-1 victory over Houston Baptist University at Pizza Hut Park today.

Milton Rodriguez netted two of Dallas’ goals, the first of which came in the 23rd minute off a short-corner played in by David Ferreira. Several defenders challenged Rodriguez for the ball at the near post, but the Colombian forward beat everyone to the ball to give FC Dallas a 1-0 lead.

Five minutes later, Rodriguez struck again on a ball chipped into the middle of the box by Brek Shea. The play began with Jackson, who played a through ball for Shea into space. Initially the pass appeared too long for Shea, but the speedy winger caught up to the ball at the end line and sent the ball back into play to an unmarked Rodriguez. Rodriguez needed every inch of his 5-10 frame to reach the high pass, nodding it past HBU goalkeeper Christopher Dodd for a two-goal advantage.

FC Dallas’ most recent signing, Ricardo Villar, was the second player to make it onto the score sheet this preseason. He scored just one minute after Rodriguez’s goal to give FC Dallas a 3-0 advantage. On the play, defender Jair Benitez received the ball in space on the left flank. Seeing Villar at the back post, Benitez sent a one-hop cross to the opposite side of the field. Villar caught up to the ball near the end line and did well to head a shot on goal given the tough angle.

FC Dallas made wholesale changes at the half, bringing on nine substitutions. The second wave of players also needed 20-plus minutes to become acclimated before finding their stride and, eventually, the back of the net. Former SMU standout Bruno Guarda broke through in the 70th minute after accepting a short pass from Eric Alexander and hammering a ball high to the far post. Alexander made the pass after bringing down a cross from trialist Maykel Galindo.

Houston scored its lone goal of the game less than one minute after Guarda scored for FCD. Kristopher Tyrpak scored, assisted by Leonel Munoz and Brian McDaniel. McDaniel hit a one-time ball to Munoz, who split the defenders and passed the ball to Tyrpak, who beat another defender and scored.
