DALLAS - The FC Dallas under-18s finished the Dr Pepper Dallas Cup XXXV Gordon Jago Super Group on a strong note, defeating Swedish side IF Brommapojkarna 2-0 in their final group stage match.
Last year's U-19 non-Super Group champions, Bromma had also lost their two previous matches to Fulham and Coritiba so only pride was on the line in this one, but the match was certainly played at a pace of two teams going for all three points.
Despite playing against the howling wind in the first half, it was FC Dallas who got off to the ideal start as midfielder Sebastian Gordillo was tripped up in the box just seconds after the game started. Gordillo took the penalty himself, scoring easily in the 2nd minute to give Dallas the early 1-0 lead.
The lessons learned from Monday's loss to Coritiba certainly proved valuable for FCD as they dealt with the wind very well, not allowing Bromma to break on counterattacks in the first half. Led by Jordan Cano and Vernon "Bubba" Bailey at the back, the Dallas defense held strong allowing only a couple chances to their opponents in a first half shutout.
In the second half with the wind at their backs, Dallas held strong and in the 75th minute, found the goal to put the game out of reach. A lofted ball was flicked on by the head of Cano to Santiago Agudelo who patiently chipped the keeper to double the FC Dallas lead.
FCD saw out the final 15 minutes to seal a 2-0 shutout win over their Swedish counterparts and finish third in their group at Dr Pepper Dallas Cup XXXV.
