FRISCO, Texas (Friday, Feb. 21, 2014) – FC Dallas has acquired Uruguayan forward David Texeira from FC Groningen as a young designated player, pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and P1 Visa. Per league policy, terms of the deal will not be disclosed.
“He’s a striker who finishes, a striker who works extremely hard off the ball and is going to complement what we have already with Escobar, Diaz, Castillo and Blas (Perez),” said FC Dallas Technical Director Fernando Clavijo. “He’s a guy we have followed for a long time. He was probably one of the best players in the 2011 U-20 World Cup in Colombia and from there he went to the Netherlands right away. He’s a very talented young man and I don’t believe he has even reached his potential yet. He’s going to be an incredible addition to our roster.”
The 22-year-old forward has been with Eredevisie side FC Groningen since 2011, appearing in 65 matches and scoring 14 goals for the club. He spent the first three seasons of his career with Defensor Sporting in his home country, notching six goals in 22 appearances with the Primera Division club. Texeira also competed in the 2011 U-20 World Cup with the Uruguay U-20 National Team.
Texeira will find at least one familiar face already at FC Dallas in midfielder Mauro Diaz. The duo were teammates as teenagers in the River Plate youth system.
FC Dallas opens the 2014 season at Toyota Stadium on March 8 against the Montreal Impact, presented by AdvoCare.
