It's getting to the business end of the college soccer season and the inaugural American Athletic Conference Tournament is headed to Toyota Stadium with the semifinals on Friday, November 15 and championship game on Sunday, November 17. Conference play wrapped up last weekend and we now know the nine-team bracket for the prestigious tournament that features three of Top Drawer Soccer's top 25 teams.
The tournament will open up with a single first-round game that puts #8 seed Rutgers and #9 seed Cincinnati head-to-head on Friday, November 8 in Louisville for the right to face #1 seed Louisville the next night. Cincinnati enters Friday's play-in game 6-11-1, while Rutgers is currently 5-10-2 but holds the higher seed based on a better conference record.
In the other game of the top half of the bracket, #4 seed Temple will host #5 seed USF on Saturday at 12:00PM in Philadelphia. By defeating Cincinnati 1-0 in overtime last weekend, Temple secured the No. 4 seed and the home-field advantage for quarterfinals. Dan Scheck, Temple’s starting keeper, has backed the team throughout the season with nine shutouts, while USF slipped into the No. 5 seed with a tie against Louisville in the last game of regular season.
In the bottom half of the bracket, #3 seed UCF will host #6 seed Memphis at 1:30PM on Saturday in Orlando. UCF enters the post-season on an eight-game unbeaten streak, and boast leading scorer Romario Williams, a Jamaican sophomore who has netted nine goals in 2013 as well as FC Dallas Academy alumni freshman Fernando Laverde who is currently third on the team in total points.
In the last quarterfinal, #2 seed UCONN will be matched up against #7 seed SMU at 4:00PM on Saturday. SMU finished their season 3-11-2, and will need a road win against UCONN to advance to keep their season. The Huskies defeated SMU 1-0 last Saturday in Dallas in the regular season finale for both teams. SMU holds FC Dallas homegrown Jamie Ibarra, who has started the last four years in goal for the Mustangs.
The winners of this weekend's quarterfinal matchups will meet in Frisco on Friday, November 15th in The American Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals with the first championship match held on Sunday, November 17. (2-DAY PASS TICKETS)
