Schellas Hyndman surprised some FC Dallas fans when he unveiled a lineup Wednesday that had David Ferreira on the wing and two central midfielders.
A similar formation could be rolled out on Saturday afternoon according to the coach, when FC Dallas takes on 2012 Supporters Shield winners San Jose Earthquakes (4:30 p.m. CT on FCDallas.com) in the preseason finale for both clubs.
Hyndman said the shift in personnel and formation was a result of FCD’s match on Sunday vs AIK. He was not pleased with the amount of counterattacks his club was giving up. So on Wednesday, Hyndman put Ferreira on the wing, had Bobby Warshaw and Andrew Jacobson in the center and Jackson on the opposite wing.
“At the end of the day, making a few changes, giving Bobby a chance, putting David off to the side gave us an opportunity to evaluate something different,” Hyndman said via phone after training on Friday afternoon.
As far as a potential line-up for Saturday’s match, Hyndman declined specifics but said there could be some more personnel switches to give the coaching staff a look at different combinations.
Saturday’s match is the last chance for trialists to make an impression. Hyndman mentioned two in particular – Cam Wilder and TJ Nelson – who have caught his eye. Both played against Portland on Wednesday, the first time coaches saw them against MLS competition.
But Hyndman said that any potential trialist signings would come down to a numbers game, as in how many open roster spots will be available.
For Hyndman, a successful match against San Jose is all FCD players – starters and bench players – improving and showing well in a competitive setting.
“One thing we have to do is prepare ourselves for the environment we’ll be playing in, and that’s playing MLS teams,” Hyndman said. “It’s doing the best we can, recognizing it’s a preseason game, trying to get better every time.”
