Generation adidas Cup: FC Dallas 0, Real Salt Lake 3
FRISCO, Texas -- Real Salt Lake U-16s defeated FC Dallas U-16s, 3-0, to secure a prized spot to challenge English side Stoke City in the Generation adidas Cup championship match.
Christian Ramirez had a chance to open the scoring for FC Dallas in the sixth minute, but his shot whistled over the Salt Lake goal.
Diego Silva of RSL tried to get on the score sheet by rounding Phillip Ponder in the eighth minute only to have his attempt saved and win a corner.
FC Dallas goalkeeper Charlie Furrer came up big to keep the match scoreless with a save in the 29th minute off a Tate Schmitt volley. The rebound fell to Josh Doughty and a wide-open goal, but his effort was cleared off the line brilliantly by Pablo Ocampo.
Real Salt Lake would not be denied before halftime. Sebastian Saucedo picked up the ball 35 yards from goal, glanced up, and brilliantly chipped Furrer to give his team the 1-0 lead going in to half time in the 32nd minute. It was Saucedo’s fourth goal of the tournament.
After the break, Saucedo took a free kick that was saved by Furrer in the 40th minute, but the rebound fell to Josh Doughty who knocked in his second goal of the tournament.
Doughty was played through by Saucedo in the 44th minute. Doughty juked Furrer with poise before slotting the ball into the net to make it 3-0 Salt Lake.
The U-16s will now play Brazilian side Flamengo for third place on Sunday, April 20 at 10:00am on Field 4 at Toyota Soccer Center.
