FC Dallas U-16s defeat Chivas Guadalajara in Generation adidas Cup day three, qualify for semifinals
FRISCO - In a must-win game, the FC Dallas U-16s clinched a spot in the Generation adidas Cup semifinals by defeating Chivas de Guadalajara 2-0 in their final Group C match at the Toyota Soccer Center.
FC Dallas opened the scoring in the 16th minute, cashing in on a Christian Ramirez corner kick. Guadalajara failed to clear their area and Phillip Ponder made them pay by finishing off a scramble and beating Guzman to the near post to give his team the early lead.
The U-16s were not done for the half. In the 22nd minute, Eric Davies streaked down the right flank and sent a curling ball into the penalty area. Ryan Barlow stretched out and brilliantly finished the cross with a diving header that Guzman had absolutely no chance to save. It was Barlow’s second goal of the tournament and FC Dallas ended the half in good shape, up 2-0.
In the 44th minute, Caleb Young had an excellent run into the penalty area and was dragged down by the Chivas left back. Young stepped up to the spot and had his low shot saved by Guzman in an attempt to keep his team in the game, but it proved inconsequential as FC Dallas keeper Charlie Furrer and his defense held up very well to preserve the shutout win.
With the win, the FCD U-16s move to 3-0-0 in Generation adidas Cup 2014, advancing to Friday’s tournament semifinals played at Toyota Stadium. FCD’s opponent has not been decided yet, and they will play at either 6:30PM or 8:30PM for a spot in Sunday morning’s championship game.
