Life has been a bit hectic for Adam Moffat over the last two weeks.

With a wife set to give birth any day, Moffat received a call mid-last week informing him that he’d been traded to FC Dallas. While the Scottish midfielder who has started two MLS Cups in the last three years didn’t hide his frustration with his second trade in three months, Ethan, a healthy baby boy, was born last Thursday and now Moffat is ready to get to Dallas.

“It’s been funny [in my career] with a long run and then short run and long [run] so hopefully this is it and I can finish out my career here playing out a long time which is something you hope for with any team you go to,” Moffat told reporters. “I have a good feeling about it. It definitely helps knowing the team really wants me there and I look forward to getting in and making a big impact.”

With Osvaldo Alonso having signed a new long-term Designated Player deal with the Sounders, Moffat’s prospects at his natural defensive midfield position for Seattle weren’t high, so the move certainly makes sense for FC Dallas who had the goal of adding another central midfielder high on their offseason wish list.

“Everyone we talked to from Columbus and in Houston identified [Adam] as a quality individual that brings the locker room together and that’s exactly what I thought we were missing a little bit,” Technical Director Fernando Clavijo said last week. “It’s a plus for us. He’s durable and plays a lot of games as a defensive midfielder that covers a lot of space, plays aggressively and has a great shot from distance.”

“Obviously the team has been needing someone at the position for the last few years and it’s nice to know they look at me for that and I get confidence from that,” said Moffat. “I know it’s not going to be handed to me, but I look forward to battling for the position.”

In addition to his on-field play, Moffat’s acquisition adds someone to the locker room with extensive MLS Cup playoff experience to the tune of 13 playoff game appearances over the past three seasons including two MLS Cup starts.

“It’s just those times where you give everything you have left in you. You give everything mentally and physically,” Moffat said about playoff games. “Sometimes it doesn’t have to be the prettiest year. You don’t always play the best, but you can outwork teams and just make it as hard as possible on them.”

After two straight years missing the playoffs, it’s clear what FCD’s goal is for next year and Moffat hopes to be a big part of that.

“Coming into the team my intention is definitely to get the team into the playoffs and I don’t see why it’s not doable,” said Moffat. “Just about every year I’ve been in the league my team has been in the playoffs and I want to keep that going, I don’t want that to stop.”
