FC Dallas College Round-Up: Pre-Tournament Edition
It's November and that means we've reached the NCAA post-season with conference tournaments in full gear on the men's side and the NCAA tournament starting next weekend. With the season over for many teams and just beginning for others, it's time to take a season-long look at some of the highlights of the FCD Academy alumni in the NCAA game that still have a chance to make noise in the post-season:
Bobby Edet - Freshman forward - Furman University
WATCH: Edet scores vs Elon
Edet has seamlessly transferred his dynamic scoring ability from the academy to college game as the freshman finished tied for 10th nationally among college freshman with seven goals this season. His seven goals scored, including this spectacular game-winner against Elon, led all Furman players and Edet was named SoCon Freshman of the Year.
Things aren't done for the Paladins who are eyeing a post-season berth in the NCAA tournament. After a goal in the final 24 seconds of the quarterfinal game against Davidson, Furman took a 1-0 victory advancing to the SoCon Semifinals where they will face off against the top seed Wofford on Friday at Stone Stadium. Edet and fellow FCD freshman Marco Ortiz have aided in Furman’s progress all season, having started in almost every game and accounting for a total of eight goals combined this season.
Mikey Ambrose - Sophomore defender - Maryland
The sophomore has had another quietly solid season for Sasho Cirovski's team having started 16 of 18 games while tallying four assists, tied for third-most on the team. After a wobbly start, the Terrapins have predictably rounded into form going 7-1-2 over their last 10 games to rise to a current #5 overall ranking. They host Boston College on Tuesday night in the ACC Quarterfinals ahead of this weekend's ACC tournament semifinals and finals.
Boyd Okwuono - Junior defender - North Carolina
It's been a strange year for Okwuono's 15th-ranked Tar Heels who boast the nation's fifth-toughest defense, but have struggled to score goals all season. UNC has held their opponent scoreless nine times, but have also scored more than one goal in a game just three times this year. Of course for Okwuono, one of the highest rated defenders in the NCAA game, the defensive record will be something he's proud of. The Tar Heels travel to Clemson for their ACC Quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday night.
Jack Coleman - Junior defender - Duke
The Blue Devils are one of the hottest teams in the country, unbeaten in their last eight games to earn a spot in the ACC tournament quarterfinals where they'll travel to Notre Dame for a match against the top-seeded Fighting Irish on Tuesday night. Coleman has started 15 of 18 games for Duke who would likely cement an NCAA tournament spot if they can upset Notre Dame.
Aaron Guillen - Sophomore defender - Florida Gulf Coast
WATCH: Guillen scores his first
In their last home game of the season, Guillen scored his first career goal in a 2-0 win over Jacksonville. FGCU cruised through the Atlantic Sun winning six out of eight games to earn the #1 overall seed. They'll host the conference tournament starting with the semifinals on Friday.
Fernando Laverde - Freshman midfielder- UCF
It will be a happy homecoming for Laverde whose UCF Knights came from behind to defeat Memphis 2-1 to book their spot in The American Athletic Conference semifinals to be held at Toyota Stadium on Friday night. They'll face UCONN in the second of Friday's semifinals. Look out for a feature on Laverde, who has three goals and four assists, later this week.
Mark Ashby - Sophomore defender - Harvard
Ashby and Harvard have rolled through the Ivy league this year with the central defender starting nearly every game for the Crimson. Harvard has an enormous game on Friday night as they host Penn with a draw or win securing their first Ivy League title and NCAA Tournament birth since 2009.
