MLS adds New York City FC as the league's 20th franchise

Hyndman & Keel react to the addition of New York City FC

It’s an announcement three years in the making.

On Tuesday morning, MLS finally broke the news of the long-rumored addition of a second New York City franchise as Major League Soccer’s 20th team. In an unexpected twist, Manchester City will be partnering with the New York Yankees for what is sure to be a polarizing franchise.

“[New York] is a big market and represents over 19 million people and there is an opportunity to really capture all the excitement and passion for the sport by bringing these two great partners together," MLS Commissioner Don Garber told MLSsoccer.com. "It's one that I think will be transformational for Major League Soccer and soccer in America."

Regardless of your opinion of New York City FC, it's undeniable that the addition of the 20th team is another positive step for the growth of soccer in America.

“I anticipated it was coming through and I think it’s great,” Schellas Hyndman said on Tuesday morning. “I think there’s been a lot of discussion about the 20th team in the league because it’s always difficult to do an unbalanced schedule. I think it’s also very positive for the league because it shows continuing growth and I know there are other teams that are also knocking on the door to get a franchise.”

FC Dallas defender Stephen Keel is no stranger to the rumors of a second team in the New York area, having spent the past two years playing for the Red Bulls.

“I think any time the league adds another team, it just shows the growth of soccer in general in America,” said Keel. “I think it’s awesome. I know the rivalries up there with New York, Philly, D.C. and now adding another team in New York will be awesome and I’m sure the fans up there are already chomping at the bit.”
