Training Report: FCD preps for Portland
PORTLAND, Ore. -- When Schellas Hyndman’s side broke the huddle Tuesday in Portland, second-year center back Matt Hedges had already returned to the first-team lineup after leaving Sunday’s match versus AIK at halftime for precautionary reasons – a good sign for FC Dallas following a 2012 season that was filled with injuries.
Hedges and the majority of the starting 11 that drew AIK, 0-0, to open the second annual Portland Timbers preseason tournament on Sunday played for 20 minutes against the second team. Michel, who officially signed with FC Dallas late Tuesday afternoon, was part of the second team. He arrived in Portland late Monday evening from Brazil.
The first team, however, stole the show by scoring twice during the short session. The second goal was due in large part to FC Dallas captain David Ferreira, who combined with Kenny Cooper down the left flank before playing a one-two pass with Blas Perez, who had checked to Ferreira in the middle of the field. The give-and-go pass cut the second team defense apart and Ferreira was able to finish off the chance, one of the most fluent passing displays FC Dallas has completed during its time in Portland.
Following the goal, Hyndman decided he had seen all he needed to see and transitioned into set pieces, a staple of his pregame ritual.
With the first team on the defensive side of the ball, Hedges won two headers before Ferreira cut out a set piece opportunity on the left flank before it had a chance to develop. Raul Fernandez also charged quickly from his line to intercept a pair of services that wondered too far inside the six-yard box.
When the first team took its turn on the offensive side of the ball, it was Ferreira who played the set pieces into the area. The first two corners from the captain were won defensively by former Red Bull Stephen Keel. George John was the first to redirect a header on goal but goalkeeper Chris Seitz made a nice save, pushing it over the bar. FC Dallas Homegrown forward Bradlee Baladez cleared away the final corner of the day with a strong header.
When Ferreira moved on to set pieces, it was Andrew Jacobson who ended the training session by burying a clinical header at the back post.
