Match Recap: Portland Timbers 0, FC Dallas 1
PORTLAND, Ore. – FC Dallas earned a 1-0 win over the Portland Timbers on Wednesday night at JELD-WEN Field in Portland, Ore. Forward Blas Perez scored the game’s only goal in the 16th minute.
FC Dallas will close out the second annual Portland Timbers’ preseason tournament against the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday, Feb 23.
David Ferreira got FC Dallas started by earning a free kick in a dangerous area in the 14thminute. The FC Dallas captain stepped to the kick, 25-yards from goal and lobbed a ball to Matt Hedges at the far post. The tall center back knocked the ball back across the face of goal but Portland was able to clear the ball away from danger before a second FC Dallas attacker could arrive.
The sequence did, however, begin a series of solid scoring chances for FC Dallas that culminated in Perez’s goal in the 16th minute. The play began with right back Zach Loyd getting forward and earning the set piece. Ferreira once again stepped to the dead ball and delivered a dangerous pass to the far post. There, the ball deflected off a group of players who were jockeying for position and dribbled loose to Perez. The Panamanian striker needed only one touch to put Dallas up 1-0, hitting a spinning right-footed blast to the upper corner of the net.
Dallas dominated possession throughout the remainder of the first half, edging the Timbers in shots, 4-2, and in corner kicks, 5-1.
FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman made wholesale changes at the half, bringing on seven new players.
Dallas most-recent signings Michel and Je-Vaughn Watson connected instantly and nearly earned FC Dallas a second goal in the 50th minute. Michel bent a free kick towards the top of the area, where Watson was able to chip a header in the direction of the back post. The ball looked to be too high, but caught the top of the crossbar and forced Portland goalkeeper Jake Gleeson to push the ball over the end line for FC Dallas’ sixth corner of the night.
Portland had a great scoring opportunity cut out by Loyd in the 59th minute. The play began with Portland’s Jose Valencia breaking free down the right flank and centering a ball into the six-yard box for teammate Sebastian Rincon. Just as Rincon appeared to have an easy tap-in goal, Loyd recovered to rescue FC Dallas with a slide-tackle that cleared the ball away from danger.
Portland had another solid scoring opportunity in the 82nd minute when referee Tyler Ploeger awarded the Timbers a free kick just outside the area. Portland’s Michael Nanchoff stepped to the kick and attempted to pick out the near post only to send the shot just wide of the left post behind goalkeeper Chris Seitz.
