Jonathan Top making most of his opportunities

Forward busy at U.S. camp and FC Dallas

It’s been a busy few weeks for Jonathan Top.

The 19-year-old Homegrown player attended the U.S. Soccer Men’s National Team Under-20 developmental camp, scored a goal in last week’s Reserve League match at Real Salt Lake and made the game day roster for FC Dallas’ match at Vancouver.

It’s the kind of life the Fort Worth-native was hoping for when he signed a contract with FC Dallas more than a year ago.

“Thank God I’m getting those opportunities,” Top said. “I’ve got to keep working hard and show coaches here and at the national team that I’m working hard.”

Top spent a week in Portland, Oregon training with the U-20 national team. The camp was filled with two-a-day training sessions, an inter-squad game and a match vs. the University of Washington.

Top said the drills focused on the fundamentals for the forwards – passing and maintaining possession.

Top started the inter-squad game and played 80 minutes against Washington.

“I feel like I did well,” Top said. “I’ve been training with FC Dallas so it’s the same level. Intensity is the same and I was able to adapt quickly to the practices there.”

Top is no stranger to time with the national team. He’s participated in past U-18 camps, but this was his first time in a U-20 camp.

Top admits he has a goal – being placed on the roster for the U-20 World Cup next year in Turkey. Qualifying for the tournament begins in February 2013.

“I feel that’s what … I’m working for,” Top said. “I’m just trying to showcase what I have.”

Top is making his mark with FC Dallas, as well.

He’s scored twice in FC Dallas Reserve League matches – one goal apiece in two matches against Real Salt Lake.

Top also made the game day roster vs. Vancouver this past weekend, the first time in 2012 he’s been listed by coach Schellas Hyndman.

Top says it’s all about being ready and willing to learn.

“I’m 19 and still have a lot to develop, but I do feel like anytime coach gives me that opportunity I will be ready for it and take advantage of it and make the most of it.”
