Dallas Cup XXXIII: Day Two Recap
DALLAS -- Homegrown stiker Jonathan Top scored the lone goal for the FC Dallas U-18 Academy squad in Monday's 1-0 win over Tigres of Mexico, the same club that beat FCD 5-0 to eliminate the U-18s in last year's Dr Pepper Dallas Cup semifinals.
Top's goal came late in the first half after a buildup by FC Dallas ended with midfielder Flavio Guzman sending a cross into the box. Top's goal would prove to be the game-winner in a tightly contested match.
Prior to Top's tally, the majority of the first half was back-and-forth in the midfield, but despite the mostly even possession, FCD did produce more scoring chances in the first half.
The second half saw Tigres put more pressure on the Dallas defense, but Homegrown goalkeeper Richard Sanchez was up for every challenge that came his way as he maintained the clean sheet.
The win kept the U-18s hope of advancing out of the group stage alive. Manchester United also won on Monday, beating Santa Clara Sporting 5-2. With an FCD win and a United loss on Wednesday, Dallas could win their group or advance via the wild card. FC Dallas will face Santa Clara Sporting at the FC Dallas Stadium Complex Wednesday afternoon.
