Dallas Cup XXXIII: Day Three recap
FRISCO, Texas -- The FC Dallas U-18 Academy team won their final group stage game of Dr Pepper Dallas Cup XXXIII thanks to a brace scored by Homegrown striker Jonathan Top and a third stoppage time goal by Academy forward Bobby Edet against Santa Clara Sporting of California.
Santa Clara put the pressure on FC Dallas in the early going, earning three corner kicks in the first 10 minutes of the match. But all the chances were ushered out by the Dallas defense to maintain the clean sheet.
FCD broke through on the score sheet after earning a free kick just outside of the Sporting box. Midfielder David Robledo stood over the ball, but only as a distraction as captain Mikey Ambrose came from the left side to pass the ball to Top on the right, who blasted the ball into the back of the net for his second goal in as many games for the Academy squad.
Much of the remainder of the game was a back-and-forth affair, with each side testing the other's goalkeeper, but neither scoring until the 73rd minute when Top scored a brace against the run of play.
It was all FC Dallas from that point on, with Edet's goal coming just before the final whistle to earn the 3-0 result.
FC Dallas still stands a chance of advancing out of the group stage, but will have to wait and see how the remaining Gordon Jago Super Group games shake out.
