USWNT vs. NZ presents unique opportunity for FCD youth player

FCD U-18 defender gets to train with Kiwis

FRISCO, Texas - This weekend's sold out match between the U.S. Women's National Team and New Zealand at FC Dallas Stadium has given thousands of young North Texas girls the rare opportunity to see their soccer heroes up close and in person at numerous training sessions and the match itself.

But for FC Dallas '94 Girls defender Valencia Mobley, the international match in Frisco presented a wholly unique opportunity. The home-schooled senior was doing homework one night when she recieved a call from her coach.

"He said, 'Hey, New Zealand and USA are playing this weekend and New Zealand needs some help playing 11v11,'" Mobley recalled. "He asked me if I wanted to join. I was like, 'Yea, of course! That’s awesome!' I was more than happy to come out and help."

Mobley typically lines up at central defender for FC Dallas in the ECNL U-18 division.

"The speed of play is definitely a lot faster(than at the club level)," she said. "I’ve learned that matters a lot; speed of play, physicality and competitiveness."

Mobley has committed to play for St. Edward's University in Austin, and she said this opportunity has helped prepare her to transition her game to the collegiate level this fall.

"It’ll prepare me for everything at the next level," the young defender said. "It’s different from club obviously since it’s the national team.

"I think this has definitely equipped me to go on and play in college. I’m really glad I got this opportunity."
