COMMERCE CITY, Colo. – The Colorado Rapids Reserves used a four goal first half to defeat the FC Dallas Reserves 5-1 on Sunday morning at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

Colorado’s goals were scored by Ross LaBauex, Andre Akpan and Quincy Amarikwa, while FC Dallas’ goal came from Home Grown player Ruben Luna. Colorado’s Amarikwa earned a hat trick on the day, finding the back of the net three times in a seven minute span in the first half.

The Rapids almost took a 1-0 lead just seconds into the match, when Akpan’s shot was tipped wide by Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz. Dallas had a chance on a breakaway three minutes in, but Colorado goalkeeper Ian Joyce saved a low strike by midfielder Bryan Leyva. The rest of the first half was all Rapids, starting in the seventh minute when Danny Earls had his shot saved by Seitz, but LaBauex cleaned up the rebound to give Colorado the lead.

Amarikwa began his impressive scoring spree in the 32nd minute, taking a pass from LaBauex inside the box and finishing to the far post. Five minutes later he played a give-and-go with Akpan before rounding Seitz and slotting into the empty net for his second. In the 39th minute, a Joseph Nane shot hit Amarikwa in the back before deflecting into the goal.

The second half was much calmer until almost the end of the match, when a Rapids defensive miscue allowed Luna in on a breakaway, shooting hard past Joyce to pull the game to 4-1. However, the Rapids reestablished the four-goal lead with one minute left in the match when Eddie Ababio charged down the wing before crossing to a sliding Akpan, whose shot found the net to complete the scoring at 5-1.

The Rapids Reserves move to 3-5-1 on the season while FC Dallas falls to 4-4-0 in MLS Reserve League action. FC Dallas’ next Reserve League match is scheduled for Wednesday, October 5 against the Sporting Kansas City Reserves on the adidas Field at Pizza Hut Park. That match is scheduled to kick off at 10 a.m. CT.
