WPSL: FC Dallas beat Comets 5-3

FCD sweep season series after high-scoring affair

The FC Dallas WPSL squad defeated the Arkansas Comets for the second time this season Sunday, winning 5-3 on a hot afternoon at Dr. Pink Field.

Dallas dominated in the first half, with midfielder Rebecca Mendoza notching the first goal of the afternoon in the fourth minute. Mendoza received a pass from Teresa Eamma and sent it low past Comets goalkeeper Brittany Hudson.

One minute later FCD midfielder Krissy Stoner sent a shot towards the Arkansas goal which ricocheted off Hudson and rolled over the goal line to double the lead early for the home team. In the 21st minute, Dallas midfielder Katelyn Ross found herself one on one with Hudson and scored on a volley to the far upper corner to give FCD the 3-0 advantage.

The Comets opened the second half on a mission. In the first five minutes of play after the break Arkansas scored two goals, both by forward Lauren Wentz.

In the 47th minute, Wentz slipped past the Dallas defenders and scored one on one against FCD goalkeeper Megan Ross. The Comets were awarded a penalty kick in the 49th minute and Wentz sent the shot low past Ross.

However, Dallas responded quickly with a goal from forward Natalie Huggins in the 54th minute. Huggins worked through the Arkansas defense and sent a volley into the Comets net.

Dallas forward Michelle Young widened the gap in the score with a goal in the 77th minute. Young received a pass from Leslie Briggs and stormed up the pitch. Hudson ran out to challenge Young and dove to grab the ball, but Young swerved past her and buried the shot.

Arkansas was awarded a second penalty kick in stoppage time, which Wentz sent past Ross to notch a hat trick. However, the lead was safe and FCD won its second consecutive game at home.

The win moves Dallas to 5-1 in its inaugural WPSL season. FCD’s next match will be a home game against Houston South Select at Dr. Pink Field on Sunday, July 10 at 2 p.m.
