Match Recap: FC Dallas 2, Seattle 0
Orlando, Fla. -- FC Dallas winger Brek Shea netted a goal and an assist in a 2-0 win over the Seattle Sounders today at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla.
"Brek Shea was very good today," FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman said following the match. "He had some great crosses, a great head ball, as good as they get, to score that goal."
Shea's header came on the second goal of the day. It gave FC Dallas a 2-0 lead in the 27th minute. On the play, Jair Benitez booted a ball forward to Marvin Chavez on the right flank. Chavez brought the ball down with his first touch before playing a ball into space for David Ferreira near the corner flag. The defending MLS MVP caught up to the pass just before it reached the end line and drove a ball back across the face of the goal. Timing his run perfectly, Shea hammered home the header after rising well above the crowd to win the ball.
"David [Ferreira] was also very good today holding the ball and penetrating," Hyndman said. "Plus Chavez – those three guys were causing a lot of problems for Seattle. And I thought Ruben did a good job considering it was the first time he really started for us. He was strong, physical and became a real handful for them."
Chavez was also involved with the first goal of the day in the 21st minute. He scored after chesting down a ball played over the top of the Seattle defense. Chavez avoided the defenders by knocking the ball out in front of him, to the right of goalkeeper Terry Boss. After catching up to the ball, Chavez volleyed a left-footed shot high into the net for a 1-0 lead.
"Defensively, we were able to get a shutout," Hyndman said. "Kevin Hartman made one very good save in the first half and I thought Chris [Seitz] made a very good save in the second half. Basically, we’re playing with two full squads and so were they. It’s a good result for us to get a shutout and play the last 20 minutes a man down. These are things that happen throughout the season and we’ll keep getting better at it."
New acquisition Andrew Jacobson was the player shown a straight red following a tackle from behind on Seattle forward Fredy Montero.
