Chávez, Honduras clinch berth in Gold Cup

Ex-MLS regular Núñez helps Catrachos top Guatemala in Copa

South Africa 2010 participants Honduras clinched a spot in this summer’s CONCACAF Gold Cup on Tuesday with a 3-1 victory over Guatemala in the Copa Centroamericana that saw los Catrachos advance to the semifinals of the tourney.

Former FC Dallas and Chivas USA winger Ramón Núñez (above) scored the opener for Honduras and midfielder Jorge Claros added a brace in their group-stage finale. FC Dallas winger Marvin Chavez was a second-half substitute.

The top five finishers in the Copa Centroamericana qualify for the Gold Cup. Honduras join El Salvador, Costa Rica and Panama as Central American participants in this summer's CONCACAF championship. The fifth and final spot will be decided by Friday’s fifth-place match between Guatemala and Nicaragua.

Honduras face El Salvador in the semis on Friday while hosts Panama meet Costa Rica. A host of MLS players are in action in the Copa, including Arturo Alvarez and Deris Umanzor for El Salvador; Roy Miller and Dario Delgado for Costa Rica; and Chávez for Honduras.
