Defining Moment No. 3: "Cannon Fodder"
Its been a memorable season of unbeaten runs and records for FC Dallas
in 2010. After a remarkable regular-season campaign that has the club in
the postseason for the first time since 2007, FCDallas.com has decided to take
a look back at five moments that defined FCD in 2010. We’ll be revealing
one every other day leading up to FC Dallas’ Nov. 6 game at Rio Tinto Stadium
against Real Salt Lake.

The second match of the 2010 Texas Derby took place on Cinco de Mayo in
Houston. The first match was a 1-1
tie at Pizza Hut Park, meaning that FC Dallas would have to win at Robertson
Stadium in order to bring El Capitan back to Frisco – a task they had never
The match marked Kevin Hartman’s first start in goal during the regular
season for FC Dallas – a role he would not relinquish until a knee injury sidelined
him in September. The in-state rivals were a stalemate for the majority of the
match. Then, in the 72nd
minute, FCD defender Jair Benitez was sent off for an elbow to Dynamo forward
But FCD did not sit back and play defense, despite being a man down. In the 79th minute Dallas’
Ugo Ihemelu scored a header off a set piece that would be the game-winner and
make FC Dallas the winners of the in-state rivalry for the season.
The match was FCD’s first shutout of the season, first win of the season and
first win at Robertson Stadium since the Dynamo joined Major League Soccer in
