What's at stake?

Both clubs want to enter the league’s World Cup break on a high note
after draws in their last matches. Frank Yallop’s Earthquakes come off a
2-2 tie with Columbus on Wednesday night at Buck Shaw Stadium, while
Schellas Hyndman’s club played Chicago to a 1-1 draw at Toyota Park last
Thursday.

Last meeting:

On October 7, 2009, FCD won 2-1 at Buck Shaw for their first win over
the Quakes
under Hyndman. FCD took the lead just after halftime when David Ferreira scored in
the 49th minute. San Jose’s Quincy Amarikwa drew
things level with a goal in the 73rd. However, Jeff Cunningham was the
hero for FCD, netting the eventual game winner about eight minutes from
full time.

Remember when?

These two clubs met at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas on July 18, 1997.
The Dallas Burn got a hat trick from Dante Washington to hand San Jose a
3-1 defeat. Washington scored his first just before halftime, in the 42nd
minute; his second goal in the opening minute of the second frame; and
his final tally came in the 68th minute.

Heroes & Villains

Frank Yallop vs. FCD: Yallop has a good history in
his coaching career against FCD, boasting a 7-3-3 record with San Jose.
During his time in LA, he went 3-3-0.

Jeff Cunningham vs. the goal: The veteran FCD
forward has struggled for much of the 2010 campaign, but has 11 goals
and eight assists in 25 career games against San Jose. Cunningham has
four goals this season, but all except one have come from the penalty
spot.

David Ferreira vs. the Quakes: Ferreira has played
the Earthquakes only twice in his short MLS career but has performed
well in those two contests. The Colombian playmaker has two goals and
one assist against San Jose. In fact, his first MLS goal came against
the Quakes in a 2-2 draw at Pizza Hut Park last June.

Stat that makes you go “Hmm…”

In their first 10 games of 2010, FCD have scored multiple goals only
twice. On April 10, they played Columbus to a 2-2 tie at Pizza Hut Park.
Twelve days later, Hyndman’s club had another 2-2 draw, this time on a
Thursday night to Seattle. FCD have now gone six straight games without
scoring more than one goal.

He said it

“They’re a good team. They’re getting results that they weren’t
getting last year. Obviously they’re a well-coached team. Right now the
guy who’s really doing a lot for them is Bobby Convey. Coming back from England, it took
him almost a full season [to adjust]. The latter part of the [2009]
season, he was looking like himself. I think they have good players.
[Joe] Cannon is a very good goalkeeper. They’ve played FC Dallas well.” –
FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman
