HARRISON, N.J. -- When FC Dallas and the New York Red Bulls put together their end of season highlight tapes, chances are there will be precious few moments from Saturday night’s 2-1 win by New York.

The win by the Red Bulls was short on flair and was instead marked with hard work and grit before 13,667 at Red Bull Arena. Juan Pablo Angel’s penalty kick in the 89th minute was the only difference between two teams looking to carve out their identity early in the season.

The Red Bulls erased an early goal from Dax McCarty in the 56th minute, thanks to a one-timer from Angel off a cross from Joel Lindpere for the Colombian forward’s first tally of the season. It was just the third score of the season for New York through four games, among the lowest tallies in the league.

Angel had the chance to give the Red Bulls a lead just moments later, after Red Bulls forward Mac Kandji was tripped up in the Dallas penalty box. But Angel’s strike was denied by Dallas goalkeeper Dario Sala, keeping the score level 1-1 until the waning moments.

That’s when Angel got his second chance from the penalty spot, this time burying the game-winner into the back of the net after substitute Sinisa Ubiparipovic was controversially tripped on the edge of the penalty box by Daniel Hernandez.

FC Dallas entered the game with two draws through two matches, a team mired at the bottom of the Western Conference and seemingly lacking inspiration. The Red Bulls, on the heels of one of the worst seasons in league history last year, were looking to erase the sour taste of last week’s lackluster 2-0 loss to Chivas USA, having started the season with two straight wins.

Any wings that the Red Bulls may have still felt after their 2-0 start to the season evaporated faster when Dax McCarty scored the game’s first goal in the game’s 9th minute. The visitors had the run of play through much of the game’s opening 10 minutes and it was McCarty who headed home a sweeping cross from Heath Pearce for his first tally of the season.

Red Bulls goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul, the villain last week in the loss to Chivas USA when he scored an on-goal on the first score of the game, redeemed himself several times in the second half of this one. In his best moment in the 68th minute, Coundoul raced out of the net to stuff FC Dallas’ Jeff Cunningham, who one-timed a Pearce through ball right into the keeper’s diving body.
