A series of reports in Europe emerged on Thursday indicating that Inter Milan and former Italian National Team defender Marco Materazzi is interested in a move to Major League Soccer.
The site of Italian TV broadcaster Sky Sports Italia is the original source of the news with its “Mercato” (Market) ticker stating that:
“Materazzi is thinking about the United States – The idea would be for next year (2011) in the case of a victory at the Club World Championship.”
The player is expected to be part of the Inter Milan team which faces FC Dallas at Pizza Hut Park on Aug. 5. New Inter head coach Rafa Benítez will also lead his side against Manchester City (July 31 in Baltimore) and Greek club Panathinaikos (Aug. 3 in Toronto) while in North America.
Materazzi is most widely known for the head butt to the chest he received from French National Team legend Zinedine Zidane in the final of the 2006 World Cup. The Italian center back was a member of the Nerazzurri squad that won the UEFA Champions League in May to complete the rare treble.
