After five games played over the weekend across the conference, we now know the four teams that will face off in Friday's American Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals at Toyota Stadium.
In the shock of the tournament, #8 seed Rutgers shocked #1 seed and seventh-ranked University of Louisville 1-0 on Saturday in Louisville, Kentucky to advance to the tournament semifinals. Playing in their second game in as many days, Rutgers defeated #9 seed Cincinnati 5-1 on Friday to set up Saturday's matchup and found a goal in the 86th minute from Mael Corboz to book their trip to Frisco.
Rutgers will face the #5 seed University of South Florida Bulls who shutout #4 seed Temple 1-0 in Philadelphia on Saturday. Senior forward Stiven Salinas scored just before halftime to put the Bulls in front and they held on for the 1-0 win to earn their semifinal spot.
On the other half of the bracket, the top remaining seed in the tournament, #14 ranked UCONN, blasted SMU 5-0 in Storrs to book their spot in the conference semifinals. Freshman sensation Cyle Larin scored twice in the win that saw the Huskies pile on pressure late in the game to blow what was a 1-0 halftime lead into a 5-0 win.
The fourth semifinalist will be the University of Central Florida who came from behind against Memphis to secure a 2-1 overtime win. Abdi Yusuf scored his first goal of the season in the 97th minute to seal the semifinal spot for UCF who will bring the only FC Dallas Academy alumni to the tournament, freshman midfielder Fernando Laverde.
