FRISCO – A future MLS star could take the field on Saturday when 4v4 tournament Futbolito takes place at the Complex at FC Dallas Stadium.

If that thought seems ridiculous, talk to FC Dallas midfielder Ricardo Villar.

He was on a team that won Futbolito nearly a decade ago in Houston.

Villar visited Houston to see his girlfriend at the time and went to a local park to workout and stay in game shape. He had just finished a season with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds shortly after graduating from Penn State.

He wound up meeting some local soccer players who were playing a pick-up game in the park.

“I played a little bit with them, they said I could do this Futbolito thing and split the money with them,” Villar said. “I said, ‘Yeah, I’m not doing anything’.”

Villar and his three impromptu teammates played in 7 matches in one day, winning each one – including the title match.

“We had no subs, it was just four of us,” Villar said. “It was competitive, little short games. Short-sided, small goals.”

Villar remembers the prize money being $500-$700 per person. It wound up being incredibly important cash on hand for him.

He had been waiting for a call from an overseas team to come over and play. A week after winning Futbolito, he got the call.

The money he won was used to buy a one-way plane ticket to Germany.

“It was funny, it was a time in my life where I was almost going away from soccer for good. Not that because of winning I stayed [with soccer]. But I played, took the cash and went to Germany,” Villar said.

FC Dallas lost a beloved member of our family, Bobby Rhine, to a sudden heart attack in early September 2011 at the age of 35.  Bobby played for FC Dallas from 1999 until 2008 when he joined the staff of FC Dallas as a broadcaster and became the voice of the club.  To honor Bobby’s life, the FC Dallas Foundation has created the Bobby Rhine Heart Project.  The project includes two elements:

  1. To raise funds to help organizations obtain the necessary training for AED and CPR.

Many organizations cannot afford the cost of training that is needed to use the AED that they have.  The FC Dallas Foundation reaches out directly to non-profit organizations, including schools, through the American Heart Association and the Red Cross to offer assistance to cover the high cost of the training.

  1. To raise funds for the American Heart Association (AHA) and promote good heart health by walking annually in the Dallas Heart Walk in September.

The Foundation is creating a team comprised of all members of the FCD family, including fans, players, staff, and anyone who wants to join us on this journey.  Members of Bobby’s family will be walking with us as well.  Walkers will be given a team shirt and are asked to donate $25 and encourage others to join the team.  Each member of the team will be given a team t-shirt prior to this non-competitive walk.

The 2012 Dallas Heart Walk is Saturday, September 8th at 8:30 a.m. at Victory Park.

The FC Dallas Foundation will be providing FCD <3's BR19 t-shirts to all team members. Team members will receive an email with details (i.e. meeting location, shirt sizes, etc.) closer to the date of the Walk.
