Charlotte defeated El Paso 0-1 on a 72nd minute goal in a second round US Open Cup match last week at El Paso. Charlotte’s Nate Thornton was credited with the goal initially, but post-game both teams agreed it was an own-goal caused by El Paso. Charlotte has never won back-to-back US Open Cup matches. It is 0-1 all time against MLS teams, losing to Chivas USA.

FC Dallas advanced to the US Open Cup semifinals in 2011 before losing at Seattle 1-0 on a Fredy Montero goal. FC Dallas defeated Orlando City and Real Salt Lake in last year's Open Cup, with both matches played at FC Dallas Stadium. FC Dallas won the US Open Cup in 1997.
