FRISCO -- FC Dallas concluded training on Friday morning as players and coaches now have a rare weekend off before reconvening next week to begin prep for a huge road match at San Jose.

For coach Schellas Hyndman, it was a productive week of training for his club.

“We did a lot of movement, a lot of tactical play, a lot of tactical sense. Every exercise had a goal,” Hyndman said.

Some of the mid-week sessions were smaller affairs this week, as the Reserves were playing in Chicago.

Hyndman said he balanced the need to stay in match-ready shape while also giving his team a chance to catch its breath after a rapid pace of games during stretches of the 2012 season.

“All we’re trying to do now is try to maintain a high level of fitness and not to wear anyone out or hurt somebody,” Hyndman said.

Asked by reporters if he’d prefer to play a match this weekend and ride the wave of momentum from the 1-0 thriller over Vancouver or have the weekend off, Hyndman opted for the latter.

“I think it’s good for us to get another week of recovery,” Hyndman said.

Julian de Guzman's last minute heroics against Vancouver have made him the talk of the soccer world this week. ESPN's Jeffrey Carlisle chatted with de Guzman about his revival in Dallas, his time in Toronto and that magical goal that has FC Dallas in the playoff hunt. The entire story is worth your time, but here's an excerpt:

While Toronto limps to another last place finish in the Eastern Conference, de Guzman's arrival has helped revive Dallas' campaign, and his contributions go well beyond his stoppage-time winner last weekend against Vancouver. Overall, de Guzman's play has been sharp, and this is borne out by statistics provided by OPTA. de Guzman's pass completion percentage has been 83.4 percent since joining FCD, compared to just 70.5 percent while with Toronto.

How to explain such a difference then? Is it a case of being surrounded by better players? Is it a matter of style? Or is de Guzman simply in a better place mentally now that his Toronto nightmare is over? It's likely a combination of all three. The arrival of de Guzman in Dallas coincided roughly with the return of several injured players, including 2010 MVP David Ferreira. Just as important, de Guzman feels FCD's playing style suits him better.

The mysterious voters behind the MLS Power Rankings jumped FC Dallas to No. 9 in the Week 28 rankings, up from No. 13 last week. FCD's dramatic 1-0 win over Vancouver at home on Saturday has FCD at its highest slot in the rankings since Week Three this season. Here's what the voters had to say:

Ninety-five minutes into Saturday's game, it looked like FCD's season was pretty much over. Ninety-six minutes in, we had one of the signature moments of the year. They still need some help to catch Vancouver, but nothing can be ruled out at this point.

Texas-based artist Brian Broadway brought his family out to FC Dallas’ training session last Thursday to present Panamanian striker Blas Pérez with his rendition of Perez’s father Blas “Toro” Pérez (right). FC Dallas captain Ugo Ihemelu enlisted Broadway to create the painting after Toro Perez passed away earlier this year. Broadway arrived midway through the training session and unveiled the painting for Perez as he walked off the pitch.

“I remember Ugo asking me for a picture of my father a few weeks ago, but I didn’t know why he wanted it,” Perez said through a translator after receiving the painting. “This is a wonderful surprise.”

Perez was back at training for the first time since scoring a goal in Panama’s 2-0 victory over Canada in 2014 World Cup Qualifying at Estadio Rommel Fernandez Stadium in Panama City, Panama, last Tuesday night.

To thank Broadway for his work, Blas gave the up-and-coming artist his jersey from Panama's win.

“I had no idea he was going to do that,” said Broadway. “At first, I thought it was an FC Dallas jersey. Then when he held it up to sign it I saw it was the jersey he wore for Panama. It really was overwhelming. I can’t say the word ‘honored’ enough. I made the painting just to honor Blas and his father. My family and I have watched him ever since he joined FC Dallas. We’re big fans and I knew he was going through a tough time. Losing your father is as bad as it gets. I’m just glad people appreciate what I am doing on that level.”

In addition to Perez’s painting, Broadway presented FC Dallas with an image of Bobby Rhine (above, left), which is to be donated to the University of Connecticut during an awards ceremony on Friday, Sept. 21.
