NEW YORK – Major League Soccer and adidas today announced the preliminary list of 2013 Generation adidas players. These players will participate in the2013 adidas MLS Player Combine and enter the professional ranks through the 2013 MLS SuperDraft presented by adidas. Additional 2013 Generation adidas class members will be announced at a later date.
Among the 2013 Generation adidas class are three NSCAA All-Americans: Andrew Farrell, Mikey Lopez and Walker Zimmerman. Joining that group is Jamaican National Team member and Virginia Commonwealth University standout Jason Johnson.
A native of Lawrenceville, Ga., Zimmerman’s size at center back makes him one of the top prospects in the country after just two seasons at Furman University. The six-foot, three-inch teenager comes from a long line of athletic prowess as his grandfather and great grandfather were former captains in Auburn University’s storied football program. While his brother was a punter for the Atlanta Falcons, Zimmerman took his talents to the soccer field and became a regular for the U.S. U-20 National Team. A two-time NSCAA All-American and All-SoCon selection, the 19-year-old was also named to the College Soccer News All-America First Team this season.
After picking up the game in Lima, Peru while with his father on a mission trip, Farrell took the Louisville youth soccer scene by storm before committing to the University of Louisville. Farrell anchored the Cardinals defense in 2012 and was named Big East Defensive Player of the Year. After leading his team to a 0.62 goals allowed per game average, he was also named a MAC Hermann Trophy Semifinalist.
Few in the college game play with as much heart and energy at as Mission, Texas native Mikey Lopez. Born in Dallas, the young midfielder played an integral role in North Carolina’s run to the National Championship last season, and the 2011 ACC Freshman of the Year didn’t disappoint this year in his sophomore campaign. The U.S. Youth International solidified the Tar Heels’ possession-based style of play in the midfield earning numerous postseason awards.
Johnson has combined his speed and strength with a relentless work rate to make him one of the most exciting forwards in the college game. A native of Happy News, Jamaica, he made his debut for Jamaica’s senior national team on February 10, 2010, coming on in the second half against Argentina.
Players who join MLS as part of the Generation adidas program receive the opportunity to develop their game and hone their skills at the professional level. In addition to training and playing with one of Major League Soccer’s 19 professional clubs, Generation adidas players receive educational grants to further their college education. Generation adidas players do not count against an MLS team’s salary budget.
Each year The Dallas Morning News' Editorial Board selects a Texan of the Year. When the winner is revealed, the paper also prints a list of nominations from its readers of people they thought were worthy of the honor for that year.
A DMN reader nominated FC Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz for his in-season bone marrow donation. The DMN published the letter nominating Seitz in its most recent Sunday editions and is pictured above. It reads:
"I nominate Chris Seitz. Chris is a goalkeeper for the FC Dallas soccer club and donated bone marrow to save a stranger's life. He made the decision to do this in September, even though he would miss the rest of the soccer season and without the guarantee of a contract for next season. In this age of professional athletes with huge egos and salaries to match, it takes a very special person to do what Chris has done."

Late last month, the FC Dallas U-14 ECNL team traveled to San Diego, California to play some of the best competition in the nation and watch the Women’s College Cup Final Four. The FC Dallas ladies played the number one team in the country and two other top Southern California teams at the event.
"Through this outstanding level of competition, [the team] was able to gain some valuable experience that will be vital as they make a push to qualify for the national championships," said head coach Matt Grubb.
In order to do that, the FC Dallas U-14s must finish in the top two out of 10 teams in the ECNL Texas conference.
In addition to the intense competition and high-quality level of play, the team was also able to see the NCAA Division I College Cup semifinals and finals. They saw both semifinal matches between Stanford and North Carolina, and Penn State and Florida State, respectively on Friday, November 30.
"Both semifinal matches were decided in overtime on some spectacular goals," said Grubb. "They saw players like Christine Nairn, Maya Hayes, Crystal Dunn, Satara Murray, and our own [former FCDY players] Alina Garciamendez and Chioma Ubogagu as well as several others that have national team experience playing at a blistering pace and with the utmost creativity and flare."
In the final on Sunday, December 2, the girls watched UNC beat Penn State 4-1.
"This trip for the ladies will prove to be a great experience," said Grubb, "to help them raise their level of play and emulate some of the college greats in hopes of one day competing at the same level."

Our friends at MLSsoccer.com are in the middle of their annual Year in Review series, which reflects on the highs and lows of the previous season team-by-team. Yesterday the series turned its attention to FC Dallas. Here's what they had to say.
FC Dallas beat writer Daniel Robertson (@DRobertsonFCD) examines the club's season and awards superlatives like Best Moment, Best Goal, Best Save and more. Robertson also suggests some offseason needs that FC Dallas needs to fill to return to the playoffs in 2013.
This time around Robertson sits down with Technical Director Fernando Clavijo to discuss what kind of impact the U.S. Soccer Hall of Famer hopes to have on the team in his first offseason with the club.
MLSsoccer.com New Media Editor Andrew Wiebe (@AndrewWiebe_MLS) shines the Opta Spotlight on FCD's 2012 campaign to see how much of an effect injuries really had on the team's performance and just how dangerous the club could be in 2013 if the right players stay healthy.
MLSsoccer.com's Matthew Doyle (@MLS_Analyst), a.k.a. the Armchair Analyst, pretty much sums this one up in the title as he looks at the impact 2010 MLS MVP David Ferreira made on the team once he returned in the middle of the 2012 season.
The folks at MLSsoccer.com also did a nice job on the video below, which takes you through every goal scored by FC Dallas in 2012 in chronological order.
On a warm September afternoon, George John kicked back in a downtown Dallas studio with the latest issue of People Magazine and waited for his turn with hair and makeup. Meanwhile, Fabian Castillo struck a pose in a nearby mirror and Jonathan Top checked the fit on his handmade Italian suit. Zach Loyd, dressed in a Canali suit and Ermenegildo Zenga shirt and coat, demonstrated a few juggling tricks while he waited for his teammates to join him on the set of their latest gig.
The four FC Dallas players should have looked out of place in the photographer’s studio, but they each transitioned from athlete to model with ease. With multiple looks already pulled for each of them and a little assistance from the shoot’s directors, the foursome showed off both office and weekend wear from some of today’s top men’s designers. The photos were recently published in Pockets’ 2012 Holiday magazine, available in store at Pockets Menswear in Highland Park Village. The magazine features a six-page center spread of the players, as well as individual shots on additional pages. Whether it’s to pick up a copy of the magazine, or to do a little holiday shopping, it’s worth a trip to Highland Park Village this holiday season.
You can check out the six-page spread below, but you'll have to pick up a copy of the magazine from Pockets to see all the additional photos.
You can also check out a behind-the-scenes photo gallery of the September shoot on our Facebook page here.
