It's been a tough road for Richard Sanchez and Mexico in the 2013 Under-20 World Cup, but there was certainly a light at the end of the tunnel.
After losses to Greece and Paraguay left the Mexicans on the brink of elimination, they've clawed their way back to the knockout round by defeating Mali 4-1 today.
Sanchez, who has started all three games for Mexico, had another strong performance in goal and with the top four third-placed teams qualifying for the round of 16, the emphatic win has Mexico in on goal differential.
With three points and a +1 goal differential, Mexico is currently in second place out of the six third-placed teams and with only Uruguay and England able to top them, Mexico is guaranteed a spot in the knockout stage.
It's unknown who Mexico will play until tomorrow's final group stage games are played, but Mexico will play on either July 2 or July 3.
Congratulations to Richard and Mexico!
Attention all FC Dallas fans! We're doing great in 2013 MLS All-Star voting so far with Raul Fernandez 3rd among all goalkeepers, but it's time to ramp things up!
Today, June 20, at 11:00AM MLS All-Star Twitter voting gets underway! Here's the details:
- Voting is open until from 12pm ET Thursday, June 20 to 11:59pm ET Friday, June 21, 2013. A short window, so make sure you get as many tweets in as you can.
An eligible vote consists of the hashtag #MLSAllStar
- AND the player's full name (first and last required) with or without a space (Example: Raul Fernandez, or RaulFernandez);
- OR their twitter @handle (Example: @RaulFernandezV1).
- A user may vote for multiple players in a tweet; however, a user may not vote for a single player multiple times within one tweet.
- A user may only vote for players on the All-Star ballot (click here to see the full ballot).
- There is no limit to the number of tweets a user may submit for any one player. Go nuts.
- Each Twitter vote counts equal to one text vote, or one online vote.
So you've got 140 characters to vote for all six of the nominated players. Unfortunately, however much a few of our players may have been snubbed from the ballot(we won't name names), a vote for them isn't valid so focus your tweets on the six players that count!
Tweet suggestion: #MLSAllStar #VoteFCD #DTID @RaulFernandezV1 Jackson DavidFerreira Michel KennyCooper @Superraton7
Get to voting! #DTID
PORTLAND, Oregon (Friday, June 14) – FC Dallas has sent a fourth round selection in the 2014 MLS Supplemental Draft to the Columbus Crew in exchange for an additional international roster spot for the remainder of the 2013 season, FC Dallas announced today.
The international roster slot will return to Columbus on January 1, 2014. Per Major League Soccer and club policy, further details of the trade were not disclosed.
Following the trade, FC Dallas now has nine international slots in 2013 – eight of which are currently filled by players under contract: Fabian Castillo (Colombia), Raul Fernandez (Peru), Jackson (Brazil), Eric Hassli (France), Peter Luccin (France), Michel (Brazil), Blas Perez (Panama) and Je-Vaughn Watson (Jamacia).
Following a 3-0 victory over the Houston Dynamo in the Fourth Round of the 2013 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday, FC Dallas (8-2-4, 28 points) faces the Portland Timbers tomorrow at 4 p.m. CT live on ESPN.
After a weekend off, there wasn't any movement in this week's power rankings for FC Dallas, meaning that the team remains in the top three in every major list for another week. Dallas has their work cut out for them this week with two games, including a Lamar Hunt US Open Cup matchup against rival Houston on Wednesday before the team travels to Portland to take on the Timbers.
MLSsoccer.com left FCD in the second spot and gave George John some love:
How was George John not on the All-Star ballot? How was he not on the preliminary 35-man Gold Cup roster? Has everybody forgotten that there's soccer happening in Dallas?
ESPN FC once again kept FC Dallas at number three:
Dallas bided its time and prepared for its mammoth Western Conference clash against Portland. Manager Schellas Hyndman will be hoping that the gastroenteritis that sidelined Blas Perez while on international duty doesn't shut the forward down.
FC Dallas also stayed put in Soccer America’s Power Rankings.
Avi Creditor of SI.com kept Dallas in the top spot despite a weekend off:
FC Dallas had the week off, but the club will wait on the word regarding striker Blas Perez, who was ruled out of Panama's World Cup qualifier with the USA with gastroenteritis. Should he have to miss the weekend's crucial bout with Portland, that'd be a big blow for a side whose Western Conference lead continues to shrink.
FCD remained at number two according to Yahoo Sports:
This won't be an easy week for Dallas. They'll have to follow a Wednesday night USOC home game against Houston with a Saturday evening contest at Portland.
It was such a big success the last time we did it, we thought we'd do it again!
We have five pairs of tickets to Wednesday's Texas Derby Lamar Hunt US Open Cup match vs Houston Dynamo just burning a hole in our pocket. We're going to be giving them away through another FCDallas.com scavenger hunt!
The first five entries with all the correct answers sent to firstname.lastname@example.org will win the tickets to Wednesday's match. All the answers can be found on FCDallas.com. Remember, only the first five with the right answers win, so get your answers in quick and if you don't end up winning, click here to get your tickets now and avoid the box office lines on Wednesday!
