FCD on Loan: September 17

On-loan goalkeeper Richard Sanchez came within minutes of setting the new NASL goalkeeper shutout streak, but saw his run  snapped at 350 minutes as FC Edmonton scored on him late in the first half of their 1-1 draw. With the draw, the Strikers remain in a tie for second place in the hotly contested NASL fall season as just four points separate first through seventh.

There was some controversy around the Edmonton goal as high winds swirling around the stadium affected an initially taken free kick. Reports say the referee allowed a free kick to be retaken that beat the FCD keeper on the second try. Sanchez was praised for his performance in the match, making six saves and earning NASL Team of the Week honors.

Forward Bradlee Baladez played the final 15 minutes of the match. The Strikers host the first-place New York Cosmos on Saturday in a renewal of their decades-old rivalry.

In Sweden, Bobby Warshaw and Angelholms FF fell 4-1 to fourth-placed Degerfors in Swedish Superretan play. Warshaw was an unused sub in the match for the Swedish side who have seven matches left in the season and sit in ninth place, seven points above the playoff relegation zone.

Yesterday in Costa Rica, Deportivo Saprissa defeated Santos 2-1 to re-take first place in the Costa Rican first division. Moises Hernandez was an unused sub in the match.
